Youth Radio on KUNC Celebrates Young Literary Voices in Colorado
Each Wednesday on KUNC, at 6:35 AM and 8:35 AM, listeners can hear vibrant and honest personal essays, written and read by students at Arrupe Jesuit High School. The project will eventually air on Colorado Public Radio and are the product of an intensive Lighthouse Young Writers outreach program—one of 20 such workshops held during the school year.
Below is an excerpt from the first broadcast featuring work by Stephen Archuletta.
He was a prisoner in his body, unable to break the cycle of pain and addiction. I couldn’t help but think that something was going to happen to him. He needed help but didn’t want to accept it. He didn’t listen, even though his dad, my grandpa, died less than 2 years earlier from alcohol addiction. I didn’t know what to say to him. I was angry that he wasn’t thinking of anyone else in his decisions. I was angry that he wouldn’t listen to my father or anyone else who tried to help him. I felt helpless because he was slowly killing himself, and there was nothing that anyone else could do to stop it. (Listen to the complete essay here.)
